Modeling
a robot (Electron)
Planning stage:
1: This
robot is containing 4 separated parts:
- Head
- Body
- Legs
- Hands
2: These items can be
constructed separated in a scene. The easiest part should be built 1st.
I started with Head, follow by the Body, then the Legs and ended by the Hands.
3: Identical progress of the model construction needs
to be captured for elaborating purpose.
4: The front view and side view of the robot need to be
placed in the viewing panel in order to create a more accurate model.

The Construction of Electron:

Side View
1:
Prepare front view and side view.
2: The views are
darkening to see clearly the line of the robot so it will more easily to model
it.
3: Place in 3ds max.
4:
Modeling head:-
Electron Head (Front,
Side, Perspective)
i. Electron
head was created with the combination of 2 cone and sphere.
ii. Cone
at upper part was extruded to become face while cone at lower part was extruded
to become neck.
iii. Sphere
was use for eye. Clone one more sphere for another eye.
5:
Modeling body:-
Electron Body (Front,
Side, Perspective)
i. Electron
body was created with sphere and cylinder.
ii. First,
create a sphere. Reform it to become hemisphere.
iii. Enter
modifier and pick edit poly to edit the hemisphere. Extrude the side of the
sphere to make it look like a body.
iv. Create
another sphere at the hands part. Then select “Boolen” in compound object to
make a hole at there so later on it is easily to combine with hands.
v. For
the neck path, extrude the shape of neck so that the neck can be shown.
vi. A
cylinder used for the backbone for electron. Enter modifier and choose bend
modifier to bend the cylinder.

Modeling legs:-

+ Legs)
i. To
create Electron’s legs, we should create its joints 1st.
ii. The
leg joint is combination of cylinder, sphere and tube.
iii. In
beginning, create cylinder for the waist. Choose edit poly to edit the middle
part of the cylinder so it look smaller compare outer part. Then cut into half.
iv. Sphere
used for leg joint. Same like cylinder, sphere also needed edited with edit
poly. Extrude the lower part of the sphere to look like the leg joint. When
finishing extrude, smooth modifier had used.
v. Tube
was used to make the joint to look like one part of the machine. Tube then was
clone for another two.
vi. Leg
and shoes can be create with the combination of box and cylinder
vii. Box
is edited to form the shape of leg and shoes, meanwhile cylinder function as
combiner between leg and shoes.
viii. After
the leg done, select all and group it. Then pick edit poly in modifier list
again. Choose the vertex that on the side of the cylinder that we cut into half
before. Next, enter modifier list again and find symmetry to mirror the leg.
ix. Choose
“Z” side to mirror. When it done, combine the legs with the head and body.
7:
Modeling hand:-

i. For
hand part, same like leg, joint should be done first. To create the hand joint,
sphere was extruded.
ii. The
length for extrude is different. In middle, there is shorter.
iii. To
create hand, 2 boxes and a cylinder are necessary.
iv. First
box was used for the arm meanwhile second box was used for the hand. These 2
boxes are edited to form the shape of arm and hand.
v. The
cylinder was used as combiner. It was placed between the boxes
vi. Like
leg, the parts of hand also have grouped and mirrored. The hands later on were
combined with the other parts of Electron.
8:
Texturing and Mapping: -
Electron (Texturing
and Mapping)
i. In
this part, we pick color for Electron.
ii. Detail
parts and accessory parts were added.
iii. Open
modifier to texture and mapping Electron.
9: Set
lighting and camera.
10:
Render.
