Modeling a
robot (doraemon)
Planning
stage:
1) This robot is
containing 4 parts:
a. Head
b. Body
c. Hands
d. Legs
2) All part can be constructed by separated in a
scene. The 1st part should be built is from top to bottom. I started with Head,
follow by the Body, then the Hands and ended by the Legs.
3) Before i start
built my project,i must have a reference picture of my project(doraemon). This
is very important for me to reference my robot without change the part of the
body.
4) The front view and side view of the robot need
to be placed in the viewing panel in order to create a more accurate model.

The Construction
of Doraemon:
1) Prepare front view and side view in photoshop.
2) Make the views are darkening to see clearly
the line of the robot so it will more easily to model it.
3) Place in
3ds max on plane created with same size.
4) Modeling
head:
a. Doraemon have a diffrent
size from head to body. When the head is more big from body.
b. so,i use a
sphere. then,i choose it a suitable size.
c. Doraemon don’t
have a neck.
d. Sphere was use
for eye. Clone one more sphere for another eye.
e. For create a
mouth and his mustache using cylinder. Make it smaller and look like a line.
f.
Lastly, create another sphere to make a face of
doraemon.
5) Modeling
body:
a. Doraemon body is
create with a sphere like a head but
more small size from head.
b. First, built a
sphere like head and make it a suitable size with his head using “squeeze” .
c. Enter modifier
and pick edit poly to edit the sphere. modify the side of the sphere to make it
look like a body.
d. Create another
sphere at the hands part.
e. For the necklaces
path, just buit a tube the shape of between of head and body. so, the necklaces
can be shown and suitable.
f.
Use a sphere to built a bell. Locate the bell in front
of necklaces .
g. Then,using a
sphere also for his poket and bell . For the poket i was make it hemisphere and
make it thin to find a good position in front the body.
h. Lastly, create
another sphere like a body to make a body shape.
6) Modeling
hand:
a. For hand part,
joint should be done first and make a mirro for the other side.
b. The length for
extrude the arm is different. At the end
of the hand is more smaller than the top.
c. To create the
finger, just use a sphere and adjust the shape of a hand .
d. This is because
doraemon don't have a finger like a human.
7) Modeling
legs:
a. To create
Doraemon’s legs, we should have a cylinder n sphere.
b. The leg joint is
combination of cylinder and sphere .
c. In beginning,
create cylinder for the long leg. Choose "squeeze" to make the shape
of leg.
d. The sphere for
his toe. Also use the same way like a long leg "squeeze" to make a
shape because doraemon dont have a leg like us and like using shoes.
e. Leg and shoes
can be create with the combination of box and cylinder
f.
Box is edited to form the shape of leg and shoes,
meanwhile cylinder function as combiner between leg and shoes.
g. After the leg
done, select all and group it. Then pick edit poly in modifier list again. Choose
the vertex that on the side of the cylinder that we cut into half before. Next,
enter modifier list again and find symmetry to mirror the leg.
h. When it done,
combine the legs with the head and body using “boolean”.
8) Texturing
and Mapping:
a. For mapping, we
pick blue color for Doraemon basic color.
b. Detail parts and
accessory parts were added such as necklaces and bell.
c. Open modifier to
texture and mapping Doraemon or lick “m”.
9) Set lighting and camera.
10) Rendering.
The reference you use should be exact front view and side view.
